Red Handed: True Colors #3 Page 5

  “Me too,” Gavin interrupted.

“Damn shifters and their enhanced hearing.” Slate teased and Gavin slung his arm around Slate.

“Eli’s still looking for Scot, Caden seems to think he’s the true mate.” Gavin spoke to us both, but didn’t take his eyes off Slate.

Slate spoke to me to, but his eyes were locked with Gavin’s, “I hope he’s okay, but I will kick his ass and yours if I have to...” It was like I wasn’t there, except I bet they were only restraining themselves because I was there.

“I thought he can’t be the True mate either because he’s bonded with Mason?” I asked.

“We weren’t bonded,” it was Mason. Slate was right, damn these shifters and their hearing.

  “I’m sorry,” I apologized.

“I was in love with Scot, but we weren’t fated mates. Not truly. I was just trying to help him get away from his uncle. It looks like I failed at that too. I hope your Eli finds him.”

“He will, he’s the best.” I tried to comfort him.

Just then, Finn and his brother Seth walked in, Seth with a big belly, and Finn with a definite baby bump.

Seth walked right up to Mason and started peppering him with questions "I don't know you, are you new in our pack? I’ve been away looking after my brother Finn here," was his greeting.

"I'm Seth, like I said, this is Finn, our alphas Nate and Jay should be along pretty soon Is your omega around? We’d love to meet him."

Mason gulped, not exactly sure which part of that to address first. Finn could tell Mason’s distress, so could all of us watching, but Finn is the one who corralled his brother.

“Stop with the third degree weirdo. Try to stick with one question at a time, Seth, your hormones are making you crazy. Crazier, this poor guy isn’t used to your particular brand of crazy… yet. You have to give him time to get used to it, just like the rest of us.”

Turning back to Mason, Finn smiled and held out his hand to Mason. "Seth is not always this nice or overbearing, just most of the time. The baby is going to his brain so forgive his excitement, and the pack has been adding so many new faces lately it’s hard to keep up.”

Gavin went over to rescue Mason, even though he didn’t seem to need it, Finn had already rescued him. “This is Mason, Scot Cameron’s good friend. He’s welcome to stay in our pack, and help look for Scot if that’s what he wants. But today, he wanted to help out so don’t pester the man or scare him away.”

“They’re not scaring me, maybe just a little. Thanks for the offer Gavin, I think I need some time away from everything for now. When I’m done here, I’ll take you up on that offer to go to your cabin in the woods and be alone with my books for awhile. There’s nothing I can do for Scot, I’d probably just get in Eli’s way.”

“If that’s what you want Mason,” Gavin told him.

He seemed so despondent, but there wasn’t anything I could do for him. I hated to root against Slate, but I hoped Mason would find his own happy ending, and not leave it up to Slate to write it.

  Scot

I shouldn't have been able to get away.

That was all I could think about as I hauled ass out of Caden’s fortress. I shouldn’t have been able to get away unseen, unmissed. I should have still been tied tightly to the bed. The door should have been locked. There should have been shifters everywhere, scenting me, following me.

  Finally I have some luck.

  I was almost free.

I didn’t know how long I had been there or what happened to me, I only remember brief flashes of being in an operating room and then being tied to a bed, and ‘observed’, by Caden and his men, taking my temperature, asking me how I was feeling, and writing it all down.

I saw the dark forest to my left and the highway to my right. There was also Caden’s car parked right next to the road which made the choice easier. The keys were in it, of course. No one would ever think of stealing from Caden, not if they planned on living to see another birthday.

I jumped in and floored the damn thing, there was no more sneaking away now, there might have been through the woods, but not with shifters following my scent and the snow falling, making it so easy to track every footstep. If the cold didn’t get me, the shifters surely would.

I focused on keeping the car on the road despite the snow and wind thrashing it, and the tires just barely keeping hold of the icy road.

I had to keep going, as far away as I could get until this thing needed gas or I ran off the road. I was hoping gas would be the problem. Hopefully I would be far enough that I could ditch the car and then take off on foot back to White Rocks, back home, to the lawyer’s office and the police. Maybe to see Rowan. Maybe to see Caden’s old pack. What he did tell me was that he wasn’t part of it anymore. I couldn’t remember why or what his plan was, but his old pack wouldn’t be very happy with him. If I could trust them, I might be all right.

I tried to shake the memories from my mind, I could focus on that later, trying to remember more. For now I had to focus on the road and getting distance between myself and Caden. Because if he or his men found me and dragged me back...

No. I wasn’t going to go back. No way.

I had to think about putting one foot in front of the other right now, not taking a step back.

Whatever happened to me, wherever I ended up, I would be better than I ever had been, I would appreciate things like soap, toothpaste, and showers so much more.

And Mason. Poor guy was just helping me out, and since I never saw him after Caden’s man found us and grabbed me…

No, I couldn’t think of that either.

I had to keep my eyes forward.

Because if I didn’t I might end up in a ditch.

  Shit.

  It was too late.

Too late to correct this car fishtailing on the icy road, too late to not end up in a ditch.

Too late to remember if you’re supposed to steer into the slide or away…

I slammed the brakes…. That was definitely not what I was supposed to do.

The airbag hit me in the face and the seatbelt strained my hips, but all I cared about was was flooring this car to get out of the ditch.

  No luck.

I wasn’t moving an inch from here.

  Okay.

I was okay, but I had lost the car.

  In a snowstorm.

With no signs of civilization anywhere.

  But I was okay.

The car was fucked, maybe leaking gas, definitely useless to me now.

I wrenched the door open and climbed out.

I had to leave it, headlights were off in the distance. Caden’s coming for me. I bet he drove while the other shifters had to chase me with their animals.

I was effed in the a.

I ran blindly into the trees, at least this way I had a chance.

Not much of one, but better than waiting on the side of the road, next to the car.

I had to keep going. The headlights got closer, and stopped at the wrecked car.

But I was running the other way, until I slipped on more ice, falling flat on my face.

I heard the truck turn off and a door open, sending me into a crawl to get as far away as possible, but only slipping more. Then I hear the snow crunch behind me and a voice I’ve never heard before:

“Where the hell are you going, mate?”
